Review

If there's one barrier between the conception of games as a modern genre of artistic entertainment and that of them being a silly, violent distraction for kids; it's maturity. By this we don't mean swearing, sex and violence, but something which will treat an adult audience with respect, telling an intelligent tale with rounded, interesting characters who you can genuinely care about. If games are ever to be truly respected in this manner then it'll have been titles like Mass Effect 2 (ME2) which began to bridge the gap. Make no mistake, for all the flashy spaceships, rattling guns and odd aliens, ME2 is most concerned with it's characters and in trying to making you sympathise with their hopes and fears as much as possible.

Bayonetta by Craig Wilson | 18-01-10

Wow. There are very few games that can leave you speechless and perhaps a little confused upon completion but Bayonetta is certainly one of them. Once you've hacked and slashed your way through the game you'll have massacred hundreds of angels, ridden missiles across the ocean, tortured cherubs, battled dragons while plummeting through mid-air and even have driven a motor bike up the side of a rocket on its way to outer space. Make no mistake; Bayonetta is excessive, gratuitous, exploitative and ludicrous, it also happens to be a whole load of fun.

Dragon Age: Origins by Craig Wilson | 05-12-09

New games are expensive. While you can buy a new DVD (or blu-ray) for about a tenner, a new game however will usually set you back about forty quid, not cheap. Then again, how do we measure worth? Some games are drastically short, then there's Dragon Age, a behemoth from the masters of RPGs at Bioware. It clocks in at fifty hours gameplay time on the first play through alone, and if you like this style of game your going to have more than one go at it. Make no mistake, this game is huge and deep, yet also intricately crafted and immensely involving, it's quite simply the best RPG to hit the shelves since Mass Effect.

Digger Simulator by Craig Wilson | 28-11-09

Let's think about awesome films. What's the best scene from any James Bond film? That's right, the one where Daniel Craig drives a digger at the beginning of Casino Royal. Commando? The bit where Arnie drives a digger into a gun store. Die Hard? It's rubbish: Why? Because there are approximately zero diggers in Die Hard. Poor work Willis, poor work.

Why is it that all game writers and developers suddenly lose any shred of creativity the moment they have to pen a female character? They always seem to resort time and again to the ‘bad-ass chick who takes no shit from anyone'. Here's Wet where you play as bad-ass chick Rubi, who takes no shit from anyone. If you don't care it's because her character has just been copied and pasted from every other female protagonist in the history of gaming.
