Tap Tap Revenge

While no prizes will be won for name innovations, Tap Tap definitely deserves some props.

Originally made to work on jailbroken iPods and iPhones, the developers have sensibly decided to offer it up in the new App Store. And for free as well.

What you get here is most simply described as Guitar Hero for your phone, except there's no guitar, or any famous songs (yet!). Simply tapping the appropriate bar when the note comes along, or flicking the phone in the relevant direction plays the game.

Taps register well and the difficulty levels are well balanced so you can find your tapping style before progressing. However, the flicking can be a bit hit or miss. Flicking the phone right, left or up and down is tricky. Not least because what you want to be doing most of the time is tapping, but also because the iPhone won't register all of your flicks. With all the furious fingering, just holding onto your phone can become difficult.

This minor gripe aside, Tap Tap Revenge is an excellent package, with online score boards and tournaments, as well as a two player mode adding to the fun.

While there are only three songs with this release, the ability to download new tracks is coming, and if they can maintain the calibre of some of the tracks (Tap Tap Tap is a bit of a lyrical shocker) there is no reason you won't be playing Tap Tap Revenge for a good while.
