What could be better than a real-life Jurassic park? How about one where, instead of placidly viewing the prehistoric beasts with Dicky Attenborough, you go around killing all of the dinosaurs in a Jeep? Velociraptor Safari gives you a Jeep, a retractable medieval flail, and an open island and tells you to go nuts.
The aim of the game, if there is one to be discerned amid all the wanton destruction, is to rack up as many points as possible in five minutes. Points can be obtained by killing raptors in a variety of ways: running them over, hitting them with your spiked-ball and chain, hitting them with a dead raptor already attached to your spiked-ball and chain, and many other variations on this theme. Additional points are gained from picking up orbs or by damaging your Jeep.
With every point, you increase a multiplier meter, and the best way to accrue points is to keep hitting everything in your path to build a bigger multiplier. At the end of the five minute stretch, your points are tallied and sent to a database to see how you fare against both the "all-time best" and "today's" players. Longevity is added to the game with the use of Xbox Live Style Achievements, such as OCD (collecting all one hundred orbs) and Extinction (killing a total of 1,000 raptors).
The full 3D engine with rudimentary physics makes the action more chaotic: raptors you’ve hit will careen into others, adding to your multiplier. The basic physics can make driving a little difficult: the Jeep has a habit of flipping over, and a more arcade-like control system would have made it a little more fun. The 3D world also means that Raptor Safari requires a slightly better machine than the typical browser based game, but most people will be fine.
If you've got a half hour to spare and want to try your hand at making a species extinct (without the World Wildlife Federation knocking at your door) then Raptor Safari is an entertaining distraction.
