Sonic, the rapid wee blue hedgehog, has undergone many a bastardisation over the years. At first glance, Jump elicits this same mix of disdain and pity for the once great hero.
Jump is new in that it plays with the classic rapid sideways platformer by making up the only option. This limits your control significantly. Sonic jumps continuously as you steer through the courses using only left and right as well as a bit of a jump boost.
With this innovation, the initial 'ripped off' feeling wears away fast. What you actually have is a nice, simple game, perfect for mobile play. Levels are short, but varied, with some excellent timing required later on. Graphically, it's the Megadrive game you remember—just as smooth as ever. The biggest complaint is that the token cut scenes leave something to be desired.
Sonic Jump is a simple game that works well on any phone. It is short enough to keep you busy on a commute, yet tricky enough to keep you coming back.
