Truly there is no thought geekier than a table top war-game turned MMO [Massive Multiplayer Online game]. Something that nerdy would surely tear the fabric of our reality and send us spiralling into the jaws of infinity. Perhaps not though, if GOA's most recent release is anything to go by.
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning hopes to add a new dimension to the massively successful board game and, if you strain, you can actually hear the pimple nosed, podgy arsed fan boys squealing with glee from their mothers spare rooms. So let's see what all the fuss is about eh?
WAR looks nice, there's a really epic feel to the games visuals that's noticeable right from the get go. The opening cinematic is stunning and the whole package seems far more adult than other MMO's. The textures are sharper and the toons are cuter. Although this is both a blessing and a curse, as the true meaning of MMORPG becomes glaringly apparent in WAR. Many Men Online Role Playing Girls.
Warhammer Online draws heavily from its table top counterpart. Everything from the landscape design to the races involved. This is not just to keep grass root fans happy but also serves to create a vibrant and interesting world to interact with. There's a tome of knowledge addition which unveils a rich and immensely deep history. Should you be interested in trawling through endless pages of text.
The premise of WAR is pretty straight forward, you choose a race either, evil or goodie two shoes then dive straight into the fight. Player versus player combat is HEAVILY encouraged, forcing characters to team up if they are to have any chance of success. Although this feature is fun mid to late game, early on it feels restrictive and frustrating. One saving grace is the fact that the PVP events happen reasonably frequently and offer a faster way to level up than the usual grindathon.
GOA have also put a lot of thought and work into WAR's economic system and player interactions. A lesson learned form previous MMO's no doubt and I'm certain it will pay dividends when the servers start to fill up. However it seems that "there in lies the rub."
Everything about WAR suggests it WILL be a good game given time. I mean just looking at the list of content that didn't make the final cut is staggering. Missing races, missing classes, missing maps and missing PVP areas. Granted WAR is a fairly stable game but with the amount of promised content omitted it bloody well should be.
Warhammer Online is fun, there's no two ways about it, but paying a subscription fee for a game that's incomplete smacks of cheekiness and borderlines on downright theft. You just need to look at the Dawn of War series to see how obsessed Games Workshop are with releasing expansion packs that really should have been part of their launch title. Wait for the muckle great box set that'll be released about a year from now. Hopefully by that point there'll be more folk playing too.
