The very idea of karaoke probably strikes fear and disdain into the hearts of many. However, Singstar, which is basically a development of the Karaoke concept, hits a very different note. There are now around 15 titles for the PS2, all of which have developed that little bit more since the first release in 2003, each becoming instantaneous successes.
Singstar is an institution in itself nowadays; a game which adults and kids alike love, even those who like to pretend that they are above karaoke! 'Singstar Parties' across the nation have born witness to people of all genders and ages fighting for the chance to hold the mic. It is for this reason that I was (sadly, some might say) excited at the release of Singstar: Singalong with Disney. "Brilliant," I thought to myself, "the wonder of Singstar mixed with everyone's favourite childhood songs." What could be better or provide more entertainment?
The Disney version of Singstar was inevitable, especially so close to Christmas. It includes a range of songs from our favourite animated films aimed, presumably, at getting the whole family together. Unfortunately, this title does not quite live up to the high expectations of the franchise. The songs range from 'Winnie The Pooh' to 'Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo' and include such favourites as The Lion King's 'Circle of Life.' However, there's something missing from the selection, and many other classics we might expect; for instance, the Little Mermaid's 'Part of your World' or Pocahontas's 'Colours of The Wind.' With so many classics absent, it's easy to feel disappointed when selecting your songs. This is the main problem with Singstar Disney. In fact, where some Singstar titles have 30 song titles, Disney only has 20.
Singing is not meant to be easy: that's why popstars are paid so much! So like its predecessors, Singstar Disney has a number of bars aimed at helping you perfect your pitch. As you might imagine, warbling Disney songs is not any easier than other music. They are either too high or too low for most Average Joe singers and many contain reams of incoherent mumbo jumbo. There is a practice area to learn lyrics, although you will more than likely want to kill The Lion King by this point rather than sing it! All in all, Disney Singstar is a disappointing title that could have been so much more. Bibbidi-Bobbidi-BOO!
