No, it is not a typo, this is a review of a new freebie java game called Left 4k Dead. Inspired by Valve's multiplayer zombie-slaugterfest, it answers the question, "What would Left 4 Dead be like if it was written in only 4k of code?" I'm not sure who was asking the question but the results are spectacular!
As in it's big brother, Left 4k Dead casts you as a survivor in a (now 2D) town infested with zombies. You have a pistol to defend yourself and a torch to light your way – it seems that the power is out after all. Each level is a randomly generated maze of houses and gardens hiding a single exit point and wherever you go you will have to blast your way through hordes of the undead.
The controls are simple and intuitive with the mouse being used for both aiming your pistol and directing the beam of your torch. The lighting is fantastic, shining through doorways and hinting at the inhabitents of the next room. Even in a 2D flash game it is impressive and you really need to keep your wits about you if you don't want to be surprised by zombies leaping out of the shadows at you.
Even if you know they are coming though, it is exhilarating to shine your torch behind you only to see dozens of the dead bearing down on you as you sprint through the town trying to find the exit!
It isn't the most relaxing of games on the internet and maybe it is a little repetitive but Left 4k Dead is a great game and you will be going back for one more try to see if you can take just a few more of them with you thins time!
