Review

As we've seen numerous times before, videogames based on comic books are patchy at best. It's all well and good letting the player take control of a much-loved character, but the damage that can be dealt if the game is poor can leave fans feeling cheated. Dull plotlines, lifeless visuals and badly implemented gameplay mechanics can all but ruin what should be a thrilling adventure and sully a character's reputation. It's a tricky tightrope for developers to walk, so it's with gladness (and perhaps relief) that we can report that developer Rocksteady has created the finest comic book superhero game to date.

Batman: Arkham Asylum by Craig Wilson | 20-04-09

Presently there are very few people in the world unaware of who Batman is. While this is of course terrible for the caped crusader himself, intent as he is at keeping a secret identity, it's usually sale's gold for various book, film and game producers (unless you put Joel Schumacher at the helm for some gods awful reason). Despite the fact EA are harbouring the license to the films and doing next to nothing with it, Rocksteady Studios and Eidos have sneakily gotten hold of the rights to the comic books and have set out creating a game with the same title as one of the most highly regarded graphic novels ever produced about the dark knight. In doing so they now have the potential not only to create a unique and captivating title, but one also bereft of the literary constraints and crippling indignity of being a movie tie in game.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe by Michael Slevin | 19-01-09

Crossovers have been used across all forms of media, characters from two separate fictional universes coming together for some reason or another. Comic books do it all the time, with heroes from one publisher's roster battling or aiding the characters of another, and video games have also dabbled in the practice, with Soul Calibur featuring characters such as Link, Heihachi, Darth Vader and Yoda over its various incarnations.

Lego Batman by Dave Cook | 20-10-08

Tricky one this. How do you rate a game which has fundamentally been the same for the past three installments? Sure, each new version has brought new elements to the table but, while they were fun games with undeniable charm, they offered nothing that we hadn't seen before.
