Review

Tekken 6 is the latest offering in a series which has always been seen as the slow, clunky and chunky foil to the flash-bang-kapow Street Fighter (SF) games. Whereas SF had the player jumping 15 feet high across the screen, lobbing balls of flaming goop and turning themselves into a living ball of electricity the best you could manage out of Tekken was a puff of sparkles every time you pulled off a well timed punch or kick. Glitzy it is not, but the amount of depth and tactical know-how required to master the game (especially in later iterations when the hardware finally managed to catch up with the developers intentions) made Tekken the thinking man's fighter.

No Bones About It... by Dave Cook | 18-03-09

With console developers dusting off the relics of past generations like it's going out of fashion, ‘what was old is now new' seems to be the creed of the moment. Lucky for Backbone Entertainment then, who have a passion for the old school few can attest to. With several unique titles under their belt, such as the fun PSP platform series Death Jr, the developer is perhaps best known for their unmatched ability to give retro titles a new lease of life on outlets such as Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA). Most recently, their work on the exemplary Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix proved a fitting homage to Capcom's fighting series, with crisp animé visuals, tight gameplay and steady online modes.

Street Fighter IV by Dave Cook | 20-02-09

It's been twenty long, long years since the first Street Fighter hit the arcades and, to mark the occasion, the fourth true sequel in the series finally sees a Europe release. There was never any doubt that this was going to be something special but, truth be told, the expectations have been significantly exceeded and the bar raised for all the other pretenders out there. This is a fitting homage to the game that redefined the beat-em-up.
