Review

The great thing about Darksiders having so many clear influences is you get to have what you love about a great swathe of games in one place; the visceral satisfaction from God of War, the balletic combat of Devil May Cry and the gadget fuelled exploration of Zelda. These don't get in the way of each other, are all done extremely well and all feature in Darksiders. You play the game wondering why nobody mixed those things before. It’s like witnessing the first time someone put peanut butter and jam together and om-nom-nomming all over it.

What could be so bad about your life that you need to revel in the act of ripping off a man’s head? And yet, rip it off you can in God of War III. The game is even "nice" enough to make it fill the frame as you do so, glorying in the tearing of skin and neck muscles, not letting you forget for a second that this is the first time you’ve truly played God of War in HD.

While next generation consoles are able to run almost any kind of game going, there's a conspicuous lack of Flight Sims out there. It could be the case that they tend to be the game of choice for PC gamers who have a full keyboard and a joystick at hand, or simply the fact that the attempts to created them have always turned out more like arcade shoot-em-ups; such as the Blazing Angels series.

Damnation by Michael Slevin | 03-07-09

As we've seen before, taking the best bits of top titles and melding them together does not necessarily make a brilliant game. Wheelman managed it, blending elements of Grand Theft Auto and Burnout to fine effect, making for a fast and fun actioner. Damnation gives it a go with highlights from fellow third-person shooters, and while not terrible, it does fall way short of the bullseye.
