Review

With console developers dusting off the relics of past generations like it's going out of fashion, ‘what was old is now new' seems to be the creed of the moment. Lucky for Backbone Entertainment then, who have a passion for the old school few can attest to. With several unique titles under their belt, such as the fun PSP platform series Death Jr, the developer is perhaps best known for their unmatched ability to give retro titles a new lease of life on outlets such as Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA). Most recently, their work on the exemplary Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix proved a fitting homage to Capcom's fighting series, with crisp animé visuals, tight gameplay and steady online modes.

Microsoft 2009: A Break From The Grit? by Dave Cook | 02-01-09

What a difference a year makes. 2008 has heralded a sea change for the Xbox 360, thanks in no small part to the NXE dashboard update. When Microsoft unveiled the update earlier this year, critics were confused by the new artistic direction, which resembles the Playstation 3 icon system, but uses custom avatars similar to Nintendo's Mii format.

There was a time when this was considered by many to be the best fighting game ever made and the critics were definitely not far off the mark. However, when it was originally released on Sega's ill-fated Dreamcast console, it lacked one thing - online play. This was forgiven due to online console play being virtually unheard of at the time.

Ikaruga by Dave Cook | 27-04-08

How many times can you repackage the same game with a few new tricks? Many developers have expanded greatly on the simple space blaster template, some attempts were hugely successful, others not so. Ikaruga is one of those rare flashes of brilliance few cult game studios achieve in their lifespan, although developer Treasure are no strangers to genius. Missing out on Ikaruga however, would be a crying shame.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night by | 24-03-08

With the legendary Castlevania series fast reaching around thirty titles, it should be hard to pick out the best of the bunch — but it's not. This is the daddy of them all. Once again, some nutter is trying to resurrect the dark lord Dracula and this time it's up to his own son Alucard to take them down. So grab your crucifix, take a deep breath and step into the castle once again.
