With Resident Evil 4, developers Capcom not only redesigned the gameplay, but the story as well, and anyone would be forgiven for thinking early on in the game that this has very little to do with the complex plotting of the previous games. Luckily for fans though, the series' Resident Emo, Leon Kennedy provided some link as the games protagonist.

Alright, alright, it isn't a game, but as Degeneration ties in plotlines and characters from other titles in the series, Capcom have granted it canonical–status unlike the previous three films and variations of the games.  In fact Resident Evil: Code Veronica was never seen as canon until the writers of Resident Evil Zero wrote so many ties from that into their game that Capcom really had little choice but to change their minds.
